Description

Ex. Geary Murdock This exceptional specimen represents one of the most vividly colored arsenopyrites ever recovered, distinguished by an extraordinary natural rainbow iridescence that dances across sharply formed metallic crystals. The specimen is composed of well-developed, medium-sized arsenopyrite crystals arranged in a balanced, tightly intergrown cluster, exhibiting crisp edges and strong geometric definition—hallmarks of elite Yaogangxian material. The surface displays intense peacock hues—electric blues, golds, violets, and teal—created by a delicate, naturally occurring oxidation layer on the silver-white iron arsenic sulfide (FeAsS). Unlike artificially enhanced pieces sometimes seen on the market, the coloration here is organic, subtle in transition, and remarkably stable, enhancing rather than obscuring the underlying crystal form. This specimen originates from a single, sensational pocket discovered in 2019, a find now regarded as legendary among arsenopyrite collectors. That pocket produced a very limited number of specimens exhibiting this degree of saturation and aesthetic balance. Among them, this piece stands out as one of the finest small-cabinet examples, combining color intensity, crystal integrity, and compositional harmony in a way seldom achieved. Formerly part of the Geary Murdock Collection, this specimen carries notable pedigree. Murdock was widely respected as an accomplished and discerning field collector, best known for discovering what are widely considered the finest gem aquamarine crystals from Idaho’s Sawtooth Mountains. His collection reflects a sharp eye for crystallographic excellence and rarity, and his specimens are increasingly sought after as they re-enter the market in limited offerings. Rainbow or iridescent arsenopyrite remains a rare and highly coveted expression of the species. When paired with a single-pocket origin, strong Chinese provenance, and an established collector pedigree, the result is a specimen of true connoisseur caliber—both visually arresting and historically significant. This piece exemplifies the pinnacle of modern arsenopyrite collecting.
