Axinite – Large Clove-Brown Bladed Crystal Plate on Custom Acrylic Base
Specifications
Description
An impressive large-cabinet Axinite specimen from the Raipa Mine in Aija Province, Ancash Department, Peru, a comparatively obscure locality noted for a limited but exceptional production of specimens beginning around 2017. The piece presents as a dramatic, sculptural plate of densely intergrown Axinite crystals, forming a deep, canyon-like central recess completely lined with sharp, bladed crystal groups. The Axinite crystals reach to approximately 4.4 cm and display the species’ distinctive flattened, wedge-like habit, with numerous acute terminations and overlapping fan-like sprays. Across the display face, the crystals exhibit rich clove-brown coloration with subtle reddish undertones, especially visible along thinner edges and more translucent crystal zones. The luster is notably glassy to bright vitreous, with reflective faces catching light across the stepped crystal surfaces. The overall composition has strong dimensionality, with upright crystal clusters along the margins and a richly crystallized interior cavity that gives the specimen exceptional depth. Minor pale Quartz associations are visible along portions of the sides and reverse, providing a subdued contrast to the darker Axinite and helping frame the mass of bladed crystals. The specimen is mounted on a custom acrylic display base, enhancing its presentation and allowing the dramatic form to be shown securely and elegantly. A fine, substantial Axinite from a scarce Peruvian occurrence, notable for its size, dense coverage of sharp crystals, warm brown coloration, and distinguished provenance from the collection of Daniel “Dan” R. Kennedy.
