Calcite – Monumental Nail-Head Crystal Cluster with Sharp Undamaged Terminations and Custom Acrylic Base

Description
Ex. Daniel “Dan” R. Kennedy Collection A monumental and exceptionally preserved calcite cluster from the Wenshan Mine of Yunnan, China, displaying the highly desirable elongated “nail-head” habit in dramatic large-cabinet scale. Measuring an impressive 31 cm across, this is a commanding display specimen with substantial architectural presence, made all the more remarkable by the fact that the major crystals appear virtually free of damage—an uncommon achievement for calcite of this size, softness, and exposed crystal development. The specimen is composed of numerous thick, elongated prismatic calcite crystals radiating outward from the central point of crystallization. These large crystals are proportionally elegant rather than bulky, with broad, clean prism faces and flattened nail-head terminations that clearly express the trigonal geometry of the species. The terminations are sharp, well-defined, and unusually intact, giving the entire piece a crisp, museum-quality presentation. The color is a soft warm ivory to pale cream, with subtle translucency visible along selected edges and thinner crystal zones. The luster is gentle but attractive, ranging from satin-like on some broad faces to more vitreous on fresher, clearer areas. Fine growth textures and faint stepped patterns can be seen across several terminations, adding surface interest while preserving the specimen’s clean overall aesthetic. A particularly pleasing feature is the contrast between the monumental outer crystals and the central blooms of smaller, highly transparent calcite points. These sparkling interior crystals add delicacy, lightness, and visual intricacy to the composition, preventing the large-scale cluster from feeling static. They also emphasize the natural growth history of the piece, with multiple generations of calcite crystallization represented in a single sculptural specimen. The cluster displays beautifully from multiple angles, with large crystals projecting in a balanced radial arrangement and no single side appearing overly dominant. Its custom acrylic base enhances the formal presentation, allowing the specimen to be shown securely and with appropriate visual elevation. The combination of immense size, strong nail-head morphology, sharp terminations, excellent preservation, and Dan Kennedy provenance makes this a highly significant Wenshan calcite specimen suitable for a serious private collection, gallery installation, or institutional display. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YO6UI3hgM9Q
