Description

A superb and highly aesthetic example of classic San Benito mineralogy, this specimen features a commanding, sharply formed neptunite crystal measuring 4.7 cm in length, dramatically rising from a pristine, snow-white natrolite matrix. The composition is bold, graphic, and unmistakably Californian. The primary neptunite crystal is elongated and prismatic, exhibiting crisp edges and well-defined terminations. Its surfaces are exceptionally lustrous, reflecting light with a deep, almost mirror-like sheen. The coloration is a rich, inky black with subtle hints of deep reddish-brown undertones visible under strong illumination—characteristic of iron-dominant neptunite. The crystal stands prominently and confidently, slightly offset from center, creating a dynamic visual balance across the matrix. Additional smaller neptunite crystals are scattered across the natrolite, adding depth and complexity to the overall presentation. Particularly striking is a radial spray pattern embedded within the natrolite—a starburst-like arrangement of dark neptunite crystals that provides both visual intrigue and mineralogical interest. The natrolite matrix itself is exceptionally bright and finely textured, forming a velvety, snow-white backdrop that amplifies the dark brilliance of the neptunite. Its clean, sculptural surface enhances the dramatic contrast, one of the most celebrated aesthetic hallmarks of specimens from the California State Gem Mine. Neptunite is a rare and visually striking silicate mineral first described in 1893 by Swedish mineralogist Gustav Flink, named after Neptune due to its association with aegirine. Although originally discovered in Greenland, the San Benito locality quickly became world-famous for producing some of the finest crystals known—often in association with natrolite and benitoite. The alkali-rich geochemical environment of this deposit fostered the growth of unusually large and well-formed neptunite crystals, such as the impressive example seen here. This small cabinet specimen possesses both visual drama and mineralogical pedigree. The included base allows for stable and elegant display. San Benito neptunite remains one of the great American mineral classics. Specimens featuring a single dominant crystal of this size and quality, set against such a pristine natrolite matrix, are increasingly difficult to obtain. This piece embodies the sharp contrast, luster, and sculptural presence that define the finest examples from this legendary locality.
