Description

A superb large Barite crystal specimen from the renowned Linwood Mine in Buffalo, Iowa, displaying beautifully transparent crystals with a rich honey-amber coloration and exceptional luster. Specimens of this clarity and aesthetic quality are seldom encountered from this classic Midwestern locality. The piece features a striking group of well-developed tabular Barite crystals, the largest measuring approximately 6.4 cm (2½ inches) in length. The crystals exhibit sharp edges and well-defined faces with excellent transparency, allowing light to penetrate the interior and reveal the warm golden tones characteristic of the finest Linwood material. The surfaces display a bright vitreous luster, and the crystals show classic Barite morphology with flat, glassy faces and crisp geometric form. The honey coloration ranges from pale golden at thinner edges to deeper amber tones within thicker portions of the crystals, producing an attractive natural color gradient when illuminated. The overall composition forms a balanced cluster of intergrown crystals, with the main crystal serving as the focal point while supporting crystals add dimension and structural complexity to the specimen. The transparent quality and reflective faces create strong visual appeal from multiple viewing angles. Barite from the Linwood Mine is highly regarded among collectors, but large, clear, well-formed crystals of this caliber are particularly uncommon. Pieces combining size, clarity, and rich honey coloration are especially sought after. The specimen remains in excellent condition, with only a minor blemish on one of the smaller associated crystals, which is not visually distracting and does little to detract from the specimen’s overall display quality. With its impressive crystal size, gemmy transparency, and classic Midwestern locality, this specimen represents a fine example of Linwood Mine barite and would make an excellent addition to any collection of American minerals or high-quality barite specimens.
