Description

A striking and unusually bold crocoite on hematite specimen from the classic Dundas district of Tasmania, centered by a single large, well-formed crocoite crystal set dramatically into a dark metallic matrix. For crocoite, which more commonly occurs as fragile sprays, slender needles, or jumbled aggregates, the presence of one substantial, thick, terminated crystal is especially noteworthy. The specimen has a strong visual focal point and a distinctly sculptural quality. The principal crocoite crystal is bright red-orange to glowing tangerine in color, with excellent saturation and translucency. It is robust for the species, showing a thick prismatic habit with strong vertical striations running along the crystal length. The faces catch light vividly, producing fiery orange highlights and a luminous internal glow. The crystal terminates cleanly and prominently, giving the piece far more definition and presence than typical broken or chaotic crocoite groupings. The crocoite is embedded in a contrasting hematite-rich matrix with dark brown to black metallic botryoidal surfaces. These rounded, glossy hematite forms create a dramatic backdrop, emphasizing the vivid color of the crocoite. Scattered smaller red-orange crocoite fragments and secondary crystals appear across the matrix, adding visual continuity without distracting from the dominant central crystal. The matrix itself is rugged and richly textured, with earthy brown iron-oxide zones, black metallic botryoidal areas, and darker granular patches. This natural complexity frames the crocoite beautifully, giving the specimen a strong old-mining-district character. The large single crystal sits prominently on the display face, slightly diagonal, creating movement and drawing the eye immediately. This is a handsome and uncommon Dundas crocoite specimen, distinguished by the size and individuality of its main crystal, vivid red-orange color, translucency, clear termination, and dramatic association with botryoidal hematite. For a species known for fragility and damage, a substantial, well-defined crystal of this presentation is a particularly desirable collector feature.
